Acne & Rosacea
Acne
Acne is a treatable skin condition triggered by the excessive production of sebum that becomes trapped in the hair follicles, resulting in bacterial infection of the sebaceous glands causing whiteheads, blackheads and inflamed red lesions (papules, pustules and cysts) to form. Shallow lesions are usually minor and heal quickly. In moderate or severe cases infected material may spread out into the surrounding tissue, causing inflammation. To prevent significant scarring acne should be treated in the early stages.
Acne is most common on the face and shoulders but can occur on the trunk, arms, legs and back.
Contributing factors include environment, diet, heredity, hormonal changes, medications and makeup.
Sebaceous glands and Cuticobacterium acnes bacteria are central to the development of acne.
Treatments for Acne
Tripolar Radiofrequency
Nonablative radiofrequency is a new safe and effective treatment alternative for moderate to severe acne vulgaris. The RF energy penetrates your skin to target overactive sebaceous glands, reducing the chances of developing renewed acne inflammation. Radiofrequency reduces inflammation by using highly-controlled heating that penetrates your skin to a safe, optimal depth where it thermally destroys the overactive sebaceous glands that cause your acne. In addition to radiofrequency thermal penetration abilities, the energy released during RF treatment can successfully destroy C. acnes bacteria.
Intense Pulse Light-IPL
We are at an exciting time in the evolution of acne therapy, as many new advances are providing positive results for our patients. The use of Intense pulsed light (IPL) may further enhance the benefits of other skin care regimes and treatments The IPL spectrum includes red light, which mediates the reduction of inflammation and promotion of wound healing and can be beneficial for acne. Clinical studies have confirmed that the surface of C. acnes an be destroyed by IPL.
Radiofrequency Resurfacing
TriFractional skin resurfacing is a radiofrequency resurfacing technology that delivers controlled ablation to the epidermis in a manner that ensures the least pain and downtime. The uniquely built tip delivers RF through the pins, removing pinpoint-sized epidermal spots, penetrating 0.2 mm deep. Non ablative RF leads to improvement of acne by decreasing production of sebum through heat damaging to sebaceous glands. The release of cytokines and growth factors as a result of this treatment will lead to improving skin rehabilitation. The treatment creates micro-wounds, which trigger the body’s natural healing mechanism. Due to their unique cone shape and RF ablation mode, the pins slide into the epidermis, renewing a wide surface area, thus providing safe and effective skin resurfacing, with minimal discomfort and pain.
Jet Plasma
Jet Plasma pen is a handheld plasma device that uses a cooler atmospheric temperature so does not create surface trauma like traditional fibroblast plasma. This extremely powerful device penetrates 13,000 volts of plasma through the epidermis, into the dermal and subcutaneous layers of the skin stimulating collagen and remodelling the cellular structure from the inside out.
When Jet plasma is mixed with oxide-oxygen, ozone is created which kills surface bacteria and is anti-inflammatory to aid in calming rosacea and acne. Jet Plasma is also used to tighten the skin, minimize fine lines, hyperpigmentation, scarring, stretch marks, and aids in product absorption that otherwise couldn’t penetrate as deep without needle injection.
Treatments for Acne Scarring
Microneedling & Radiofrequency Microneedling
Microneedling has become one of the mainstays of minimally invasive scar treatment. It involves using fine needles to create numerous controlled, invisible puncture wounds called “micro-injuries” in the skin. These micro-injuries break up scar tissue and stimulate the body’s natural wound healing response to rebuild the tissue in a more organized (i.e. less scarred) fashion. Now, the power of microneedling has been amplified with the addition of radiofrequency, revolutionizing how we treat acne scarring. Radiofrequency is a type of energy that heats tissue and stimulates production of new collagen and elastin. When combined with microneedling, RF is directly delivered to the scarred, problem areas below the skin.

Rosacea
Signs and symptoms of rosacea include:
Facial redness. Rosacea usually causes a persistent redness in the central part of your face. Small blood vessels on your nose and cheeks often swell and become visible.
Swollen, red bumps. Many people with rosacea also develop pimples on their face that resemble acne. These bumps sometimes contain pus. Your skin may feel hot and tender.
Eye problems. Many people with rosacea also experience dry, irritated, swollen eyes and red, swollen eyelids. This is known as ocular rosacea. In some people, the eye symptoms precede the skin symptoms.
Enlarged nose. Over time, rosacea can thicken the skin on the nose, causing the nose to appear bulbous (rhinophyma). This occurs more often in men than in women.
The cause of rosacea is unknown, but it could be due to a combination of hereditary and environmental factors. Rosacea is not caused by poor hygiene.
A number of factors can trigger flare-ups, including:
Hot drinks and spicy foods
Red wine and other alcoholic beverages
Temperature extremes
Sunlight or wind
Emotions
Exercise
Drugs that dilate blood vessels, including some blood pressure medications
Various cosmetic products
Risk factors
Anyone can develop rosacea. But you may be more likely to develop it if you:
Are female
Have light skin, particularly if it has been damaged by the sun
Are over age 30
Smoke
Have a family history of rosacea
Rosacea Treatment Options
Lumecca IPL
Lumecca is a very powerful intense pulsed light (IPL) that treats vascular lesions. After several treatments, you will notice significant improvement in the complexion and clarity of your skin. IPL uses short bursts of high energy light to penetrate into the skin and correct a variety of abnormalities. It has been used to effectively treat the redness associated with rosacea and the removal of broken facial veins The device’s heat also stimulates your body’s natural collagen production, making pores look smaller and skin look firmer and smoother.
